                      SPEECH LANGUAGE PATHOLOGIST : AN OVERVIEW.

                         Speech language pathologist or SLP is a profession where professionals help children to improve their communication.  Children with communication delay or any other disorders related to speech and language is treated by speech language pathologist. Speech language pathologist is also called speech therapist. Speech therapist not only deals with children, they also deals with adults with speech disorders. There will be conditions where adults lose their acquired speech due to trauma , post surgery complications , stroke etc. following conditions are treated by speech language pathologist.

IS SPEECH LANGUAGE PATHOLOGISTS ARE DOCTORS ?

                    Speech language pathologists are not doctors , they are therapists . Speech therapists diagnose the disorder by observing the signs and symptoms. They do not provide medicines , instead they carryout different activities and exercises to improve communication. Speech therapy is a profession where the therapist need more patience because we may not see immediate results and it takes time depending upon the severity of the disorder.

When to consult a speech language pathologist?

          If your child is not speaking like the other children then its time for you to consult a speech therapist. If your child's speech is only understood by you and not by others or if the child is not able pronounce certain sounds or if he/she doesn't complete a word properly then its time for you to consult a speech therapist. In most of the cases the child will be having developmental delay. There are cases where speech delay is not due to developmental issues but due to environmental factors.
